As we know, Smt. Indira Gandhi was the toughest woman here ever to reach the apex of the Indian administration. She had a firm grip over the country when she was the Prime Minister and took some bold steps which even men would have feared to take. She was undoubtedly one among the greatest women leader of not only India but the whole world.

Smt. Indira was born in Allahabad on 19th Nov. 1917. She was only the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India and Smt. Kamla Nehru. Thus, she had a legacy of Patriotism and politics running into her vein.

Smt. Indira Gandhi was no different to h er faher pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and grandfather Motilal Nehru in the Patriotic aspect of her family. Just like them she loved her country more than anything else. She was very much impressed by the life of Gandhiji when she visited the Sabarmati Ashram.

Like Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, even she got her early education at home. She did her matriculation from Pune and later for further education joined Shanti Niketan started by Rabindranath Tagore. She then moved to Switzerland and England for higher education.

Her mother Kamala Nehru died in 1937, after being ill for long. It was a large shock for her. After her father. She married a Parsi, Feroze Gandhi in 1941 which was highly opposed by the Hindus. As India gained Independence in 1947, her responsibility of looking after Pt. Nehru increased greatly. This added to her experience and exposure to politics.

After the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, She joined joined the Cabinet of lal Bahadur Shastri as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. She became the Prime Minister of India in 1966, When Lal Bahadur Shastri died. She was the first woman to reach the post and so for she is the last one also.

During her tenure India has seen many highs and lows. In 1975, she had to declare National Emergency to crust the Sila Srebeldion in Punjab. She crushingly defeated Pakistan in 1971 was to separate Bangladesh. But the drawback of the 1975 emergency she lost the general elections in 1977. But the opposition could not able to from a stable government and Smt, Indira Gandhi returned to power in 1979.

On 31st October, 1984, She was assainated by one of her body guard. She will always be remembered as of the greatest leader of India and among the top women leaders in the world.
