The missile man of India, the brightest star on the horizon of Indias technological development took office as the 12th President of India. Dr abdul Pakir Jainuabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on 15the October, 1931 at Dhanush Kothi in the holy town Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. He was born in poor family of boatmaker.
He was an exceptionally brilliant child, passed the higher secondary examination from Schwartz High school and graduated from St. Joseph’s college. Later, he specialized in aero-engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology which was newly established that time. Here, the whole course of his life was changed.
Soon, he joined the Defiance Research and development Organization (DRDO) in 1958 and five years later he joined the Indian Space Research organization (ISRO). He rose in position very soon as his genius was recognized by his seniors. Though Rockets were not his field of work still he was very interested in them.
India’s indigenous satellite launches vehicles design development and management was greatly contributed by him. It planted the satellite into its near earth orbit in 1980. It took 10 years of hard work and determination of Dr kalam and his team from conception to the launch of SLV III. But it failed the first time. Dr Kalam graciously accepted all the responsibility of the failure with the virtue of making it successful next time. Next time the SLV III was launched successfully..
Dr. Kalm left the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center in 1982 and joined the Research and Development establishment Hyderabad as Director. It was here that he conceived the Integrated Guided Missile Development programs and laid foundation for indigenous design development of critical technology projects. In 1986 the Guided Miscible Board took the decision to take up Missile Technology contraol Regime from there on short range anti-tank. Nag, surface to air Trisul and Akash missiles 250km range prithvi and Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) Agni Came into existence.
Thus, with such unparallel service to nation. He was proved to be the real son of india as evident from the long list of his awards. He was honored with Padma Bhushan in 1981 and Padma Vibhushan in 1990. In 1997, he received the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration. On the 25th November, 1997, Dr kalam was awared Indian highest civilian award i.e The Bharat Ratna. On December 8,2000. He won the lifetime Contribution Award in Engineeering.
