Diwali, the festival of lights! It is one of the most beautiful and very important Hindu festivals celebrated by all Indian. Apart from its religious significances, Diwali lights up not only in homes but also hearts as well because this is a time that near and dear ones meets, exchanges sweets, gifts and loves !

There are many stories about the origin and celebration of Diwali Some people say it started when Lord Ram got back to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and defeating Ravana. The people of Ayodhya lit up lamps to celebrate the occasion and thus the name “Dipawali.” According to others Lord Krishna Killed Narkasur on this day. Jain community celebrates this festival because Lord Mahavira attained salvation on this day. The reasons for celebrating the festival may be varied but enjoyment is the same for everyone.

Diwali falls at the end of October or in the beginning of November. According Ho to Hindu Calender in the month of Kartike. Diwali is celebrated for five days. The preparations start many days in advance with the cleaning of housed and shops and their decoration. Housed are painted and cecorated. This is the main business season for manufacturers of idols, flower shops, cracker companies, candles and earthen lamps etc. People are eager to buy new thing. Most of the people buy new clothes, utensils and greeting cards etc. There is a great hustle bustle in the markets.

First day is “Dhanters” On this day new metallic things are purcdhased like Gold, Silver or Bronze. Second day is “Narakchaturdashi” forth one is “Balipratipada” fifth one is “bhaiduje.” Third day is the most important day that is “Laxmi Puja.” On this day Rangoli is drawn in front of the door. Doors are decorated by festoon and garland. Rows of lamp are lit. Wearing new cloths everybody worships the goddess “Laxmi” and start bursting crackers and whole that night of “no moon day” changes into “full light night”

Everyone likes this festival of lights in general but particular children are the happiest of the lots. As they have Diwali vacation, they can enjoy the festival completely. They get new clothes, lots as of sweets and most importantly they get crackers to burn.

Diwali is undoubtedly the most favorite festival of all Indians.
