Rabindranath Tagore was born in respectable family of Bengal on 8th may 1861 in Jorasanko. His father, Maharishi Debendranath was a great landlord and was known as “Thakur”, the word which got changed into “tagore”. His Mothers name was Sharda Devi. He was the youngest in the family of Debendranth and Sharada Devi. He received his elementary education in two schools of Calcutta namely Oriental Seminary and Calcutta Normal. Tagore went to England in 1871 and Joined the University college of London for higher education.
Tagore’s family life was very sad. He was married in 1888, but his wife died in 1902. His second daughter died in 1904 and his father passed always in 1907. These ad events in life made Tagore more and more religious.
Rabindranath was among the greatest men in India and was among the great of the literary personalities of the world . he was a versatile genius being a poet, novelist, play writer , essayist, short story writer, statesman, musician, painter, philosopher, actor educationist and freedom fighter, and all-round personality. His “Gitanjali” is one of his best works. Some English poets like W.B Yeats and Stop Ford brook praised Tagores Gitanjaili. The poems combine tender humanity with a deep religious touch. He was awarded the Nobel prize for Gitanjali. Balka and Purabi are also his great works. One of his greatest poetical drams was Chitrangada. Hel also wrote some beautiful short stories.
Rabindranath actively participated in Indias Freedom Struggle though his writing. He was a great educationist also. He founded the Vishwabharti in 1901. He wanted to make India a home of culture and education, and famous university of the world.
Rabindranath was seer. He was born to rule the hearts of men and lead them from darkness to light from ignorance to knowledge his message had a universal appeal. He had thought us to love nature in most intimate moods to be in communion which has enriched the literature that he has given us.
He was a geat lover of his country, nature, humanity and children in particular. He believed in non-violence and rejected traditionalism as much as western countries. He wrote the Indian National Anthem “Jana Gana Man…” he set Shanti-Niketan with the money he got from the Noble Prize. He gave up the title of ‘Sir’ as a protest against the Jallianwal Bagh tragedy in 1919. He died on 8th august, 1914
