Dussehra is a true national festival of India.  This festival is celebrated in all the parts of India with different names, traditions and customs.  It is a ten day a long festival and has some mythological facts related to it.

It is believed that Lord Ram prayed to Goddness Durga for nine days on the tenth he was successful in killing Ravana.  In the Northeast it is believed that Goodness Durga came on earth on this day.  The general sentiment is that of the victory of the good over the evil.

The North India, it is celebrated for ten days.  For nine nights the Ramie is played that depicts the Ramayana and on the tenth night Ram defeats Ravana and huge effigies of demons Ravana, Kumbhakaran and meghnad are burn at may places.

The Durga pujas of the North east and west Bengal are very famous.  Huge idols of durga are worshiped for nine days and immersed into the sea on the tenth night Religious songs and chants fill the atmosphere an the devotees immerse their favorite deity in the water.  

In the wastern part of India Goddess Saraswati is also worshiped along with Goddess Durga.  Navaratri is clelbrated with nine nights of Ras and Garbha dancing .  Gujrat is famouse for its Garba dances.  On Dussehra day the leaves of ‘Shami tree”, are given to friends and relatives and are called as ‘God ‘ on that day.

In southern India, this festival is celebrate with a wonderful display of dolls.  A small pot called ‘Kalash’ is worshipped which is the symbol of strength and fertility.

Now a days, people from various parts live together in may cities.  Thus everyone enjoys the festival in their won manners Children wear new clothes and get toys and sweets.  Businessmen worship their account books on this day.  Farmers worship their tooks.  Sisters put a tilak on the forehead of their brothers and pray for their welfare.
